I spend most of my blogging energy on encouraging and helping families get outdoors for adventures in nature’s playground. Either through practical advice and tips, or suggestions of where to go or what to do. However, it is a long time since I had a Mamma sized adventure, and recently I heard about the Fjällräven Polar expedition. I thought for all of about 2 seconds, and then put my mind to applying for it.
What Is The Fjällräven Polar?
Let’s start with who Fjällräven are. They are a huge Swedish outdoor company. The company started with the vision of one man back in 1960, to make nature accessible to more people. Virtually every Swede owns a piece of their kit. So what is the Fjällräven Polar? It is a 300km-long journey by dogsled through the Arctic wilderness. It starts from Signaldalen in Norway, to Väkkäräjärvi in Sweden, driving your own dogsleds, taking care of your own dogs, preparing all your own food and setting up your own camps with tents. HOWEVER….to gain a place from your region (mine is UK/ Ireland / Belgium / Netherlands / Luxembourg – since I hold a UK passport, even though I am living in Sweden) you need to accumulate votes. Only 2 people from every region of the world are chosen, the first one is the vote winner, and the second Fjällräven decide. So, as you can imagine there is a lot of competition to gain a place for this chance of an Arctic adventure.
This is where you come in, and where I need your help, many many pleases!!! If you follow the link you can vote for me, and possibly help me get the opportunity to head off on this adventure. PLEASE VOTE HERE!! The closing date is in 12 days (11th December) so time is limited.
So why on earth do I want to do a big adventure? I love taking our little people out on their own mini outdoor adventures, teaching them skills, and encouraging their connection with nature, but I really feel it is time I could have my own adventure again. The route is through Norway and Sweden. I know Norway well due to my mother’s side of the family, and I am living in Sweden. I adore both countries, and would love to see more. I am intrigued by the wildness of the Arctic and the possibility of being so remote and immersed in nature. The sort of wilderness we would be in is not as easily accessible under your own steam, not to mention to have the experience of doing all this with a team of dogs and sleds. I would be immersed in nature for a week, learning and using a lot of new skills, and living 24/7 in my favourite place…the outdoors. It would also be a huge challenge for me. The weather conditions alone would make everyday tasks a lot harder to complete. I would have to learn on the job about an awful lot of things. However, I feel I need a challenge of this magnitude and the experience is a once in a life time opportunity. The selection process too guarantees a vast mix of people from all walks of life and from every part of the world. It would be a very interesting experience meeting all these people and learning from them about their everyday lives. It is not often you get the chance to be exposed to so many people of different nationalities and cultures in one go.
So that is a little bit about the Fjällräven Polar, and why I would like to do it. So please go ahead and vote for me. Thank you!!!
