Finishing the Mini Beasts Topic

We have had a rather full day finishing off our hunting for mini beasts topic from the nature curriculum.  This morning we went out into the garden with some hairspray and black card.  The idea was to spray a spider web with hairspray (once the spider had left) and then pull the card from behind it to the front, laying the web onto the card.  Another light misting of hairspray was then put over it on the card, giving a lovely effect on the black card (unfotunately this doesn’t show up on a photo to show though).  All three did it, and suprisingly, none of the mini men squirted the spray into their eyes!

We then retreated indoors out of the chilly weather that has suddenly appeared and we are most unaccustomed too!  Next up was making mini beast collages with art and craft supplies.  This progressed from making mini beasts on card, to making mini beasts on their own, to making sunglasses!!  However, in one brain wave of an idea of threading thread through pompoms to make caterpillars, all three children have learnt impromptu basic needle threading, bit of sewing, and knotting!  An extra skill notched up unplanned.  They had a lot of fun and spent nearly 2 hours on their creations.  We added an extra extension activity into the topic.  Our little lady is obsessed with having her face painted.  Our mini man no.1 has only ever had 1 face paint previously, but seemed game for another, and mini man no.2 who has an aversion to anything on him, actually consented to a face paint on his arm!  Huge progress 🙂  Mini Man no.1 has an ant, little lady a butterfly, and mini man no.2 a new species of pink sparkly ant!

img_9530The last activity was to hunt for mini beasts, have a look at them in the specimen pots, and then fill out our nature journals.  First of all we had a little chat about annelids and molluscs (by far the most popular things in our garden along with arachnids), 6 legs and three body parted insects, isopods (14 legged, rigid, exoskeleton bugs), and myriapods…more than 14 legs.  We then looked at what we’d collected and talked through what each was, where we could see various body parts, and then what class of beast they might possibly be.  They have learnt a lot about the anatomical structure of mini beasts, and enjoyed putting it in pictures in their nature journals (or on their faces!!).
